Chapter Thirteen

“JACK-JACK! COOKIE?”

Miles must have heard that fifty times in the last three days. The pups, Jim and Joe, were already fed, dressed for bed, and getting their story. They did not need cookies.

Good thing Jack was a professional.

“Nope. No cookies. I’d have to brush your teeth again.”

Jim sighed and Joe groaned, and then, together, they tackled Jack, growling at him.

“Oh-ho! Miles, help me!” Jack rolled, snapping his human teeth nowhere near the babies.

“Miles to the rescue!” He grabbed Jim and swung the pup around, loving the happy squeals.

Joe leaped, and Jack caught him midair, a la Superman. Boom.

The oldest three were already upstairs in their rooms with their computers and TVs and phones. They had to get the babies to bed, and Jack could be Miles’s hero too.

He needed to touch—not even in the sexual way, more in a pet me, lover way. He needed to ease the ache inside.

Poor Kenneth must be frantic.

“Uncle Miles, when Dadkey come home?”

“I bet he comes home this week.” Soon had become an overused word. Worthless.

He knew, given no encouragement, Kenneth would be lost in work, in the crazed rhythm of his life. They needed to encourage the boss to come back.

They needed their mate to get home.

“Okay, who wants to be the one to turn on the nightlight?” Jack gave the kids turns at it, which had saved Mrs. Horn’s sanity.

“Joe’s turn! I did yesterday!”

“Way to be honest, Jim!” Jack smacked a kiss on Jim’s head. “Okay, Joe. Go for it.”

Jim beamed at Miles, the pups both soaking up praise like sunshine. They were so sweet at this age, so loving. Miles felt a little pang that these would be the last babies they had to raise.

They’d been wee pups when they’d come to them, the tiniest fuzzballs, and now they were little boys.

Jack glanced at him. “You okay? You’re all misty.”

“They’re growing up fast.”

“Every day, huh? I feel so honored to get to know them.”

The nightlight clicked on, and two expectant faces turned to them. “One more story, Jack-Jack?”

“One more story. Spoiled beasts.”

Miles made a hmmm noise. “Three Little Pigs?”

“We eat the piggies! Munch!”

“Only real piggies, though. Not friend piggies,” Jack said.

“Not friend piggies. Biting is bad.” Joe intoned the words, the little one having had that lesson drilled in.

“Yeppers.” Jack opened the book and began to read, his big bad wolf voice perfect.

Jim was asleep before the huffing and puffing commenced, and Joe crashed before the end, both boys curled up under the covers.

Jack kissed the tops of heads, then tugged Miles out of the room. “Shhh.”

He closed the door, inhaled deeply. “You want a beer, Jack? We can sit on the sunporch.”

“I’d love one, babe.” Jack looped an arm around him.

“It’s good to be home.” He missed his alpha, but he had been born to defend the pack.

“Yeah? I’m glad you came back.” Jack paused so he could take a kiss.

Miles turned toward Jack, easing their bodies together. Jack was solid, huge, and heat poured between them. God, he loved touching.
